Checkrides, BasicMed, and More at Second Saturday!

If you're planning to take a Private Pilot checkride or complete a flight review before long, you'll want to be familiar with the FAA's published Airmen Certification Standards (ACS), which establish the framework for all practical tests. At this month's Second Saturday Seminar, Willamette Aviation CFI Josh Thomas will review the ACS, and specifically the "Areas of Special Emphasis," which the FAA have identified as critical to flight safety. Expect a thorough discussion of stall/spin awareness, collision avoidance, use of checklists, Aeronautical Decision Making (ADM), and more.

At this month's event, we'll also offer a review of BasicMed, which took effect about two years ago. Pilots who have held a medical certificate since July 14, 2006, have a driver's license, complete a medical examination, and take the BasicMed education course can fly below class A airspace as long as it's not for compensation or hire. For many pilots, BasicMed has taken the place of a Third Class Medical, but there are several details to consider. We'll discuss why you might want to use BasicMed, as well as what privileges and limitations it confers.

This month's Second Saturday gets underway on April 13 at 1100 in the Education Hangar at Willamette Aviation. The event is certified for FAA Wings credit and there is no charge — drop by or sign up on the Wings website to save your spot. We'll see you there!

Get Hands-On with ADS-B at Willamette Aviation!

ADS-B is a cornerstone of the FAA's NextGen system, and it will be mandatory for all aircraft that operate in airspace where a transponder is required, starting on Jan. 1, 2020. We're pleased to note that ADS-B is available in three of our fleet aircraft, including our Cessna 177 Cardinal RG. ADS-B is the FAA's first step in transitioning from radar-based to satellite-based air traffic control. If you'd like to learn more about ADS-B for your own airplane, check out this helpful page from the AOPA, and feel free to schedule a flight with one of our instructors to get a look at ADS-B for yourself.
