We'll Review the Trip to Oshkosh at This Month's Safety Briefing!

Every summer, pilots descend upon Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wis., to attend the annual EAA AirVenture Oshkosh — an event so large that the airport's tower temporarily becomes the busiest in the world. At this month's Summer Safety Briefing, CFI Catheline Leoni will review the journey to and from Oshkosh, which she flew to this summer from Oregon. Details will include the initial plan, coordination with ATC, cockpit resource management, fuel and contingency planning, and some last-minute changes. If you plan to visit Oshkosh someday, or intend to return, don't miss this one!

This month's Safety Briefing gets underway on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 1100 hrs in the Education Hangar at Willamette Aviation, and it's eligible for FAA Wings credit. We'll also host a Community Potluck BBQ at 12 noon, with plenty of burgers and dogs for everyone. Drop by to get a look at the airplanes on our ramp, and please bring chips, a dish, or a dessert to share if you can.

Short Finals…

· We're delighted to welcome Peter Neel to our team of flight instructors! He credits his father for his love of aviation. Peter grew up in rural Alaska, where his father taught him to observe local flight patterns and walk toward the airport if he was ever lost. Together they practiced this skill while enjoying the sights of DC-6s, Twin Otters, and F4 Phantoms that utilized their hometown airport in the 1970s. Peter eventually became a private pilot after college, and then took a few decades off to feed his family. After two successful careers (in express freight and winemaking), Peter considered his family's needs were sufficiently met to get back to the world of aviation and make it his final career. Be sure to say "Hi!" to Peter the next time you see him on the ramp or in the pilots' lounge.

· The summer airshow season wraps up in September, capped by the Oregon International Airshow, which will be at McMinnville Municipal this year with featured performers the Royal Air Force Red Arrows (Sept. 20-22). The annual Hood River Fly-In is always worth the short flight through the Gorge to Ken Jernstedt Airfield (Sept. 7-8). The Oregon Pilots Annual Convention will take place on Sept. 14 at the World of Speed Motorsports Museum in Wilsonville. And folks who can make the flight or drive to Spokane can look forward to the Felts Field Autumn Invitational, an annual showcase of vintage aircraft (Sept. 27-29).

· Our Private Pilot Ground School fall session gets underway this month — it's good value for student pilots, people who are getting ready to fly, and anyone who needs a refresher. The 40-hour, FAA-certified course is led by certified instructors and includes five complimentary hours in our Flight Lab (instruction fees apply), as well as free attendance to any future private pilot course. Classes start on Saturday, Sept. 21 and run each Saturday for 12 weeks from 0800-1200 (with a break for Thanksgiving). First-time ground school attendees receive a 10% discount on ground school tuition ($423, regularly $470) and course materials ($134.95, regularly $149.95) as well as 10% off in the Pilot Shop for the duration of the class.
