Customer Appreciation at This Month's Second Saturday!

At this month's Second Saturday, we'll be hosting our annual Customer Appreciation Lunch with a YouTube Year in Review! There's no lack of aviation videos to be found on the Internet — everything from amazing aerobatic displays to the occasional skids, bumps, and gear-up landings. And while we often find ourselves amused and entertained by the skill (or folly) of others, there also is a lot to learn from what we find online. We've collected some of our favorite YouTube clips for discussion — drop by this month's seminar to see everything we've selected, along with a few tips that should improve your flying skills.

This month's Second Saturday gets underway on Jan. 11 at 1100 hours in the Education Hangar at Willamette Aviation. The event is certified for FAA Wings credit and there is no charge. Best of all, lunch is on us. We'll serve as many as we can, but please call us (503-678-2252) before noon on Friday, Jan. 10, so that we know how many folks to expect. As always, thanks for being part of our aviation community!

Kurt van Krieken Joins Our CFI Team!

We are pleased to welcome Kurt van Krieken to our flight instruction team this month! Kurt's flying career began shortly after his tour in the US Army was over, using the GI Bill to earn both a degree in Aviation and his commercial pilot's license and CFI rating. He's flown all over Oregon, parts of Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Nevada. Kurt's first job as a CFI was in Idaho, where he met some old-school pilots and flew cool airplanes like the RV-6. He also participated in a new high school flight training program — the first of its kind in the area. Kurt then returned to Oregon, where he taught foreign students the art and science of high desert flying, improving his skills as both a pilot and CFI, thanks to a combination of extreme crosswind landings, icy runways, language barriers, and cultural diversity.

After a few years off, Kurt is back in the right seat and excited to teach others how to take flight. Other than flying, Kurt has a deep love of nature — if he's not in the air, you'll probably find him on a lone mountain somewhere, catching a sunset. Please be sure to introduce yourself to Kurt the next time you see him on our campus!

Short Finals…

· We are excited to announce that a full-motion Redbird FMX will be available for our customers, starting in 2020! This fully enclosed simulator package from Redbird comes equipped with an innovative, three-axis, electric motion platform that provides effective motion feedback for yaw, pitch, and roll. Both analog and glass cockpits are available in the immersive, wrap-around experience. And the FAA has approved the FMX as an Advanced Aviation Training Device (AATD), so it's loggable for pilots who are pursuing an instrument rating, as well as rated pilots who would like to retain currency or complete an instrument proficiency check. Feel free to contact one of our flight instructors or our dispatch desk to schedule a flight in the Redbird FMX!

· Our Private Pilot Ground School winter session gets underway this month — it's good value for student pilots, people who are getting ready to fly, and anyone who needs a refresher. The 40-hour, FAA-certified course is led by certified instructors and includes five complimentary hours in our Flight Lab (instruction fees apply), as well as free attendance to any future private pilot course. Classes start on Saturday, Jan. 25 and run each Saturday for 12 weeks from 0800-1200. First-time ground school attendees receive a 10% discount on ground school tuition ($423, regularly $470) and course materials ($134.95, regularly $149.95) as well as 10% off in the Pilot Shop for the duration of the class.
