Review Aviation Safety Culture at This Month's Second Saturday!

Aviation has seen remarkable transformations over the past 120 years, from the dawn of powered flight (on Dec. 17, 1903), to the breaking of the sound barrier, the explosion of passenger jet travel, and journeys to outer space. During this time, our ideas about aviation safety have evolved as well. At this month's Second Saturday Seminar, Willamette Aviation CFI Bob Wood will take us on a journey as we look at our Culture of Safety — in particular, with the emergence of Aeronautical Decision Making (ADM), Crew Resource Management (CRM), and the understanding of how human biases can lead to unwanted outcomes. Where have we been, and where might we go from here? We're looking forward to seeing you at this month's event!

This month's Second Saturday gets underway on Nov. 11 at 1100 in the Education Hangar at Willamette Aviation. The event is certified for FAA Wings credit and there is no charge. After the event, everyone is welcome to stick around for this month's Apple Pie Social. We'll be serving hot apple pie and other treats. We'll see you there!

Short Finals…

· Pilots flying in the vicinity of Salem-McNary Field (SLE) will want to keep their eyes open for occasional Boeing 737 traffic. Avelo Air is now flying non-stop routes to Las Vegas (LAS) and Hollywood Burbank (BUR), with departures and arrivals on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Salem-McNary Field hasn't supported passenger flights since 2008, when Delta ceased operations. In addition, those previous flights were regional jets — Avelo's 737-700 aircraft are the largest seen in regular service at SLE in recent memory (United Airlines ceased 737 service to Salem in 1980). With Avelo flights now underway, initial estimates suggest that Salem eventually could support as many as 750,000 passengers per year. For more information, visit OPB.

· Night operations are well underway here at Willamette Aviation. Clear days in fall and winter make for the best flying, and with the days getting even shorter during November and December, it's an excellent time to build some night experience with a CFI. Pilots log "night" hours based on operations between evening and morning civil twilight (FAR 1.1), but remember — in order to carry passengers you must meet the requirements of "passenger night" — three full-stop takeoffs and landings between one hour after sunset and one hour before sunrise, within the previous 90 days, or passengers are prohibited from flying with you during this same definition of night (FAR 61.57b). And don't forget a third "night rule" — position lights must be on between sunset and sunrise. Ready for a brush-up? Let us know if you'd like to get on the night schedule.
