Review Airport Operations at This Month's Second Saturday!

The Aurora State Airport is a busy place, and 2024 will be no different than any other year. In addition to near-constant flight training operations, everything from small personal aircraft to helicopters and large corporate jets can be seen arriving and departing at all hours of the day. At this month's Second Saturday Seminar, Aurora State Tower Chief Raul Suarez will drop by to discuss Airport Operations, with a specific focus on lessons learned over the past 12 months by the Local Runway Safety Action Team (LRSAT). Runway incursions and Vehicle/Pedestrian Deviations (VP/Ds) are always a high-priority safety topic, and we'll hear from the team on what we can do as pilots to keep these to an absolute minimum. We also expect to get tips on how pilots should interact with the tower for effective communication, and we'll be sure to take your questions as well. Don't miss this one!

This month's Second Saturday gets underway on March 9 at 1100 in the Education Hangar at Willamette Aviation. The event is certified for FAA Wings credit and there is no charge. After the event, everyone is welcome to stick around for this month's Apple Pie Social. We'll be serving hot apple pie and other treats. We'll see you there!

Short Finals…

· We are delighted to welcome Jon Park to our team of flight instructors at Willamette Aviation! Jon is a native Oregonian who has been around aviation for most of his life. He grew up next to an airport, which means he frequently saw aircraft flying over his house. He also heard stories about family members who served as pilots and air crew in the armed forces. Thus, Jon joined the U.S. Navy, making several deployments and working alongside various aircraft on ships, including EA-6B Prowlers. On assignment with one of the Navy's first UAV squadrons, he got to know many pilots and soon realized that an aviation career was possible. After the Navy, he earned a degree in aviation and became a flight instructor. "I enjoy helping people achieve their goals," Jon says, "whether it is getting a private pilot certificate, commercial ratings, or anything in between."

· If you plan to update your FAA Medical Certificate this year, don't forget that FAA Designated Medical Examiner Janice Buenafe, M.D. offers flight medicals on the third Thursday and fourth Saturday of every month here at Willamette Aviation — her next office hours on our campus will be March 21 and March 23. Also, please remember that pilots are required to complete an electronic 8500-8 prior to arriving for an appointment. To log in or register with MedXPress, visit medxpress.faa.gov.
